In this week’s blog post, we would like to talk about a crucial product widely used in hydraulic systems: Speed Increasers (PTOs).
A vital component of hydraulic systems, PTOs (Power Take-Offs), function as power transmission units and are often referred to as “hydraulic speed increasers.” PTOs are designed to convert mechanical energy from a vehicle engine or another power source into values suitable for the system’s operational requirements.
Purpose and Applications of Speed Increasers
The primary purpose of speed increasers in hydraulic applications is, as mentioned above, to obtain the desired level of mechanical energy for use in the hydraulic system.
Speed increasers are commonly designed to connect hydraulic pumps to tractor PTO outputs. Tractor PTOs typically rotate at 540 RPM, but hydraulic pumps often require a higher operating speed. This is where speed increasers come into play, increasing the RPM to a level suitable for the pump.

The hydraulic pump, with its RPM adjusted by the speed increaser, then supplies flow to the tractor’s attachments. Gear ratios can vary, such as 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, or 3.5. For instance, if a 1:3 ratio speed increaser is attached to a PTO rotating at 540 RPM, the pump will operate at approximately 1620 RPM.
Working Principle of Speed Increasers
Speed increasers transmit the low-speed power from the tractor PTO into higher RPMs. Their internal structure typically consists of gear systems or planetary gears. These systems balance torque and speed, converting low-speed, high-torque power into high-speed, low-torque power. This enables them to meet the high RPM requirements of various agricultural machines.
