  • Pressure: The hose diameter determines the pressure resistance of the system. For high-pressure applications, thicker-walled and narrower diameter hoses should be used. This increases the hose’s resistance to pressure and reduces the risk of bursting.
  • Hose Length: The length of the hose has a significant impact on pressure drop in the system. Longer hoses should have a larger diameter. This minimizes pressure drop and improves system efficiency.
  • Flow Velocity: An important factor to consider when selecting hose diameter is flow velocity. Determining Hose Diameter

When determining the hose diameter, there are three main factors to consider: flow rate, internal hose diameter, and flow velocity. Let’s look at how to calculate the correct hose diameter using the diagram we have provided:

Select Two Known Values: These values are usually flow rate and flow velocity.

Draw a Line Intersecting These Two Values: This line will give the third value on the diagram.

Read the Third Value from the Diagram: This value will be the internal diameter of the hose.

The fluid velocity should not exceed the range indicated on the right side of the diagram. At high velocities, turbulent flow can occur, leading to pressure losses and overheating. Lower velocities are preferable for long hoses and high-viscosity oils, while higher velocities can be used for short hoses and low-viscosity oils.

For a better understanding, consider the following example;

In a system with a flow rate of 100 liters per minute and a flow velocity of 4.5 m/s, to determine the internal diameter of the hose for the pressure line, we use the diagram to find the internal diameter to be 25 mm.
